Common English Phrases 8

During our daily conversations we face different situations that either we should agree them or disagree or sometimes ask  others for comment & even may be we want to interrupt others’ speech. Following phrases can help you. Use them in your daily conversations!

Agreement

I hadn’t thought of that
That’s a good point
Yes, I see what you mean.
Yes, I could go along with that.

I-don’t-see-what-you’re-getting-at.

Disagreement

I’m afraid I don’t see your point.
I can’t agree with you on that, I’m afraid.
I don’t think that’s true, actually.
Do you really/honestly think so?
I don’t see what you’re getting at.

Asking for comment

Would you like to add something?
Is there anything you’d like to say/add?
Would you care to comment?
What do you think?

Interrupting

Can I butt in here?
Can I interrupt?
Can I say something?
Could you let me speak, please? (Not very polite)

Finishing

If you’d let me finish.
What I was trying to say was…
Don’t interrupt me, please.

Misunderstanding

I don’t think you got what I was saying.
I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick.

  • Now use these phrases in sample conversations.

Can’t tell who/what/where these people are, due to the masks on their faces.
Judging by the fact that these people are carrying axes, I’d say they were going to kill their English teacher.
I would/wouldn’t imagine it’s very satisfying to correct lots of badly written essays every week.
It looks as though he’s trying to escape through the window of Room 3.
If I were him, I’d feel overjoyed to hear my language spoken so badly
I can’t see the expression on his face, but I’d hazard a guess that he’s over the moon due to the fact he’s jumping in the air.
I’d imagine that anyone who wishes to correct essays all weekend. would have to be motivated.
Presumably this kind of activity appeals to people who feel the need to suffer in their lives.
His expression makes me think he’s been working very hard on the project.
The child looks excited by the prospect of meeting a native speaker.
I’d say her pride is due to the fact that she was able to dispose of the body without the police finding out.
As in the previous picture there are people working in a field.
while in the next picture we can clearly see that the men look very happy.
Comparing the two pictures, I’d say…
Unlike the woman in the first picture, this man seems to be hard at work.
In contrast to the first picture, I’d say that this woman is highly motivated to do well.

    This is an educational magazine. if you are going to use people’s articles it would benefit your readers if they were proof read first. You are at risk of teaching people how NOT to speak and write English which is, at best, unprofessional. I speak as not only an experienced, qualified Literacy and Numeracy teacher, but also as a TEFL teacher with a great deal of experience of teaching on 3 continents.
